What is Patchwork Faith?
- Carissa Hjellming
- Faith & Identity
A patchwork is described as “something composed of miscellaneous or incongruous parts; a hodgepodge”. Faith is a “belief or trust in God without doubt or question”.
Isn’t our life a hodgepodge of sorts? There are the good times, the bad times, the wins and the losses. There are times in our lives when we have a strong faith, one without question or doubt. Then there are other times when life seems to turn upside down. We find ourselves questioning our very existence.
I have come to find that my life is a “patchwork”. I have traveled in coarse fibers of darkness, crawling in search of the light. The charcoal darkness of death has robbed me of love and life. I have skipped through golden paths of sunshine, dripping with laughter. I have watched my newborn enter the world to be embraced by a rainbow of love awaiting her arrival.
A simple phone call on an average day can change the course of your life forever. I have watched evil kidnap young souls and witnessed angels resurrect the lost. Haven’t we all experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows? It is how we choose to live that will alter our patchwork. Will you try to put it all together on your own? Will you reach deep within yourself to find the strength to move forward? Will you lean on your own intellect? Or will you put your faith in that of the ultimate weaver? With God, all the crazy pieces of your life will fit together—as if designed that way from the very beginning. You will see the beauty that holds many different pieces together. Without God, your life will remain ragged pieces, torn and crumpled. There will be no ultimate design—no meaning, not much lasting beauty to be found. Without God, you will often find yourself in a heap of scraps, without rhyme or reason.
Everyone has a story of their own. This is what “patchwork faith” is about. It speaks of the moments we barely survive, but by the grace of God. It also illuminates those moments we see God clearly. Where are you in your story today?
Are you sitting on the mountain peak holding hands with your God? Or are you lying flat on your face—looking for the courage to get back up? Do you talk to God daily? Are you close in your walk with Him? Or are you asking yourself, “Why has God forgotten about me? Is there really a place for me in His kingdom?”
No matter where you are today in your life’s journey, one thing is for sure. You have moments of darkness and light behind you and moments that lie ahead. How will you choose to live these moments? What will your patchwork of faith look like in the end? You can walk it alone and choose to be in control of your own destiny. God allows us this choice.
My hope is that you will choose God as your life’s guide. My hope is that you will realize it is never too late to invite him in. He is patiently waiting. Finally, my desire is that you will always hold on to your faith. It is faith that will join the pieces of your life together into your very own beautiful patchwork.
