From the Deer Stand

There’s something sacred about the stillness of a deer stand. Each November, as the morning light creeps over the horizon, I sit in quiet reflection—listening, watching, waiting. It’s more than a family tradition; it’s where I meet God in the stillness. Out there among the rustling leaves and distant calls of wildlife, He reminds me of the beauty in patience, the lessons in quiet, and the gift of simply being still. Whether or not a deer appears, my heart always comes home full. In that solitude, I pray, ponder, and listen for His voice. It’s where He slows my hurried spirit and refocuses my heart. We all have a place like that—a space where God draws near. Where is yours?

Sitting in a deer stand gives me a perspective. Each year I walk out on opening day and start my morning in the dark, listening to the sound of silence. It is a tradition I grew up with. Each hunting season, my dad, my two brothers, and I would venture out in the dark, cold, November mornings to see who would bring in the venison for our family. I would spend most of my time watching squirrels, birds, pheasants, and the occasional raccoon scurry about—just doing their thing. Sometimes a doe would approach with her fawns, and I would just watch in complete awe as they trotted away.

Some years, I was luckier than other years. My quiet patience would pay off, and a buck would show himself. Unlike some hunters, I never killed for the “sport” of it. I saw what happened to deer when there were too many and there wasn’t enough food for them during the cold, harsh winter. I watched them waste away, slowly dying from malnutrition or chronic wasting disease. I eat what I harvest and in this, God shows me the circle of life.

In addition to this, God and I always have an intimate time together. When you are sitting in a tree or a “stump” for hours on end, there is a lot of pondering that takes place. Every year, it becomes a time of reflection for me. I look back on where I have been, and I ask God what He has in store for me. I ask questions. I seek. I contemplate my life. I pray for my loved ones. I see God in all the details.

For those of you who know me, I don’t often sit still. It is during this season; God has all of me. Motionless, in one spot. Still. Listening to my very own breath. Grateful for all of it. Feeling my heartbeat.

What is it for you? What slows you down and brings you close to God? Where can God reach you? Do you run, meditate, or cook? Are you crocheting, making pottery, or journaling?

No matter where you are or what you are doing, find time to connect with your Creator. He wants to speak with you. He wants to hear your relentless Hallelujah as you praise Him.
